Apple is facing pressure to remove its controversial artificial intelligence (AI) feature. As per reports, the backlash came after BBC News formally complained that some iPhone users received misleading alerts of its news articles. The AI product summarises breaking news notifications. It is available on devices running iOS 18.1 and later that are designed to simplify notifications by condensing multiple alerts from the same app into a single sentence.

The company has announced that it will soon release an update to address issues with these AI-powered news alerts, reports said. The tech giant, in a statement said that the update would make it clearer when news alerts are summaries generated by Apple’s AI system.

The company in a statement to BBC said: “A software update in the coming weeks will further clarify when the text being displayed is summarisation provided by Apple Intelligence. We encourage users to report a concern if they view an unexpected notification summary.”

Fake News Alerts

Some iPhone users received notification that showed Luigi Mangione, the man accused of killing a US insurance CEO, had taken his own life – even though he’s alive and well in prison. Other than BBC, in November 2024, a ProPublica journalist highlighted erroneous Apple AI summaries of alerts from the New York Times app suggesting it had reported that Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had been arrested.
